Linux is a UNIX-like operating system kernel, originally developed by
Linus Torvalds,
and first released to the public on
September 17th1991.
Since then, many individuals and companies have contributed to the growth of the operating system,
as well as creating packaged versions of it for use on servers, desktops and
embedded applications. The Linux kernel is distributed under the
GPL version 2,
although the applications software which runs on top of the kernel is distributed under a wide variety
of different licenses.
