Product Description:
Gentoo Linux is a computer operating system built on top of the Linux kernel and based on the Portage package management system. It is distributed as free and open source software. Unlike a conventional software distribution, the user compiles the source code locally according to their chosen configuration. There are normally no precompiled binaries for software, continuing the tradition of the ports collection, although for convenience, some software packages are also available as precompiled binaries for various architectures. The development project and its products are named after the Gentoo penguin. Gentoo package management is designed to be modular, portable, easy to maintain, flexible, and optimized for the user's machine. Gentoo describes itself as a metadistribution, "because of its near-unlimited adaptability".

The primary form, Debian GNU/Linux, which uses the Linux kernel and GNU OS tools, is a popular and influential GNU/Linux distribution. It is distributed with access to repositories containing thousands of software packages ready for installation and use. Debian is known for relatively strict adherence to the Unix and free software philosophies as well as using collaborative software development and testing processes. Debian can be used as a desktop as well as server operating system. It focuses on stability and security and is used as a base for many other distributions. The Debian Project is governed by the Debian Constitution and the Social Contract which set out the governance structure of the project as well as explicitly stating that the goal of the project is the development of a free operating system. Chapters: Ututo, Sabayon Linux, Tin Hat Linux, Kororaa, Systemrescuecd, Calculate Linux, Vidalinux, Gentoox, Incognito, Fireballiso, Pentoo, Knopperdisk. Excerpt: Ututo GNU/Linux is a GNU/Linux operating system comprised entirely of free software. The name makes reference to a gecko known by this name from northern Argentina. It is compiled using Gentoo Linux "ebuilds" and "emerge" software. All documentation is in Spanish. Ututo was the first fully free GNU/Linux system recognized by the GNU Project. The founder of the GNU Project, Richard Stallman, formerly endorsed the distribution nearly exclusively, and used in his personal machine, before he switched to gNewSense. Ututo is one of the few original GNU/Linux distributions that have its own complete binary repository. Ututo also has different binaries optimized for different Intel and AMD processors . That makes Ututo reasonably fast on old machines used in third world countries. Ututo was first released in 2000 by Diego Saravia in National University of Salta. Argentina. It was one of the first live CD distributions in the world and the first GNU/Linux distribution in Argentina, under ISBN 987-9381-06-8. Ututo carried Simusol, a system to simulate Solar Energy projects. Ututo was called the simple GNU/Linux, because it did not need any configuration. It automatically detected the hardware in the machine, it only asked to "move your mouse". At that time no other distribution worked that way. In 2002, Ututo-R was created, which offered the possibility of operating like a software router. This version was created by Marcos Zapata and used in Buenos Aires public schools. In 2004, the Ututo-e project was born, swiftly becoming the most important derivative of Ututo. This project was started by Daniel ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2771695

Chapters: Portage, Gentoo/alt, Hardened Gentoo, Gentoo Reference Platform, Ebuild, Gentoolkit, Genkernel. Excerpt: An ebuild is a specialized bash script format created by the Gentoo Linux project for use in its Portage software management system, which automates compilation and installation procedures for software packages. Each version of an application or package in the Portage repository has a specific ebuild script written for it. The script is used by the emerge tool, also created by the Gentoo Linux project, to calculate any dependencies of the desired software installation, download the required files (and patch them, if necessary), configure the package (based on "USE flag" settings), compile, and perform a sandboxed installation (in /var/tmp/portage/ /image/ by default). Upon successful completion of these steps, the installed files are merged into the live system, outside the sandbox.Although most ebuilds found in the Gentoo Portage repository are used to compile programs from source code , there are also ebuilds to install binary packages , ebuilds that install only documentation or data such as fonts , and basic ebuilds called "metabuilds" which solely trigger the installation of other ebuilds (such as the GNOME or KDE metabuilds).See also (online edition) Websites (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Genkernel is a tool for building a general-purpose modular Linux kernel for Gentoo Linux . Genkernel compiles the kernel with all available device drivers built as modules, then copies these to a RAM disk that is passed to the kernel at boot time, providing automatic hardware detection. It is designed to allow users with little or no experience configuring a Linux kernel to easily set up a working kernel. The main reason for genkernel is the fact that you hav...

Excerpt: CRUX is a lightweight, i686 -optimized Linux distribution targeted at experienced Linux users. The distribution is delivered by a tar.gz -based package system with BSD -style initscripts. CRUX also has a ports system to install and upgrade applications. Although the word "Crux" in Latin means "cross", the choice of the name "CRUX" itself has no meaning. Per Lidén created it for "sounding cool", using an ending "-X" to evoke Linux and Unix . Current release is 2.6. Draco uses pkgsrc as the default package manager. It is developed by Norwegian Ole Andre Rodlie. History In 2006 hotstian (Stian Andreassen), a member at a Norwegian forum, posted that he was looking for someone to make an improved Slackware distribution with. Ole Andre Rodlie joined and they made eSlack . They rewrote the package manager and added other packages Slackware did not have at that time. At the end of the year the project was ended, as it was too big for two persons. After half a year Ole Andre Rodlie continued the development under the name Draco Linux, this time as a one-man-project and with a new package manager. References (URLs online) ...
